Tony Blankley Dead: Wife Lynda Davis Reveals Conservative Columnist’s Cause of Death is Stomach

By Steve Brown

Tony Blankley, a conservative author and commentator who served as press secretary to Newt Gingrich during the Republican takeover of Congress in the 1990s was dead at 62. Tony Blankley’s wife, Lynda Davis, says he died of stomach cancer on Saturday night January 7, 2012 at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington. Besides his wife, he is survived by three children, Spencer, Trevor and Ana. Expressing deep sympathy about Tony Blankley’s death, the Washington Post's Karen Tumulty posted, "Tony Blankley will be missed. What a life: child actor, prosecutor and Washington power player. And a really, really funny man." Fox News' Bret Baier called him a "good man." Newt Gingrich paid tribute to his former congressional press secretary Tony Blankley by calling him a "caring and loving person" who will be missed deeply by his family and friends.

Tony Blankley was born in London but he moved with his parents to California and became a naturalized American citizen. With his British accent, eclectic tastes and sharp tongue, Blankley was a child actor while growing up in Los Angeles. Mr. Blankley also became a familiar presence on political talk shows on radio and television, most prominently on “The McLaughlin Group,” for which he was a regular panelist and the radio program “Left, Right and Center”. After serving Gingrich as press secretary from 1990 to 1997, Mr. Blankley remained prominent as a commentator on politics and international affairs. As Gingrich’s spokesman, Mr. Blankley typically tried to defuse the furors that would arise over statements such as the congressman’s suggestion that women’s roles in trench warfare were limited by “biological problems.” In a 1996 interview with The Washington Post, Mr. Gingrich acknowledged that one of Mr. Blankley’s duties was to try to rein him in. “Tony,” he said, “is one of the people who go around all day picking up on what’s not working.” Most recently, Mr. Blankley was a senior executive with the Edelman public relations firm.
