Lionel Messi Named World's Best Player at Ballon d'Or Gala (Pictures)

Barcelona's Lionel Messi easily extended his reign as the best player of 2011. The soccer star wins over his club teammate Xavi Hernandez and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo to gain the title in Zurich, Switzerland on Monday, January 9, 2012. This 24-year-old Argentina striker has been awarded the FIFA Ballon d’Or for the best player of 2011. And this is the third Ballon d'Or success and a second Champion League success in three years for Messi.
Only Zinedine Zidane and of France and Ronaldo of Brazil won the trophy three time and Michel Platini was the only player who won the title for three consecutive years. Although Messi is just 24 years old, he could now be judged alongside other superstars of world football through years.
Lionel Messi, the star of the final match in the Champions League 2011, has also won many prestigious titles. With talent, last year, Messi was honored with five trophies, including the Champions League, Spanish League, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup as well.
Earlier this year, Lionel Messi also was also named in the Goal.com 50 countdown of the best players in the world of season 2010-11. During his 70 appearances in the year of 2011, the football player scored 59 goals for his club and country, including 55 in 57 for Barcelona. Messi also made 35 remarkable assists for his colleagues in the calendar year.

Barcelona's player received the contributions from many people, including Man United manager Alex Ferguson and Xavi, who praised him for being a great player who is just 24 and is attempting to break all the records in the world football. “He’s going to be one of the best footballers in the history of the sport,” Xavi said.
