Harry Morgan, well known for his acting skills and especially for his performance in the TV series M*A*S*H as Colonel Sherman T Potter, has died recently. He was 96 years old when he died. He was found dead at his home on December 7, 2011, in Los Angeles, California.
His death was reported by the New York Times, however, no specific reason was attributed to his death. Morgan had six impressive decades in Hollywood to his credit and was most famous for appearing against top notch celebrities like Henry Fonda, Robert Mitchum, Jimmy Stewart, Gary Cooper and Marlon Brando. Morgan had about a hundred movies in his name. Nevertheless, he was better known for his acting on television and the beloved characters he helped to create.
Audiences were impressed by his performance of the officer Bill Gannon on the serial Dragnet and then as a fatherly figure on M*A*S*H, following the exit of McLean Stevenson who played Lt. Col. Henry Blake. A past interview with Archive of the American Television revealed that Morgan cherished his role of Potter and called it one of the best roles of his lifetime. Potter was a paternal figure to every single MASHman who was 7000 miles from his home. He commanded attention and respect.
In fact, Morgan received fan mail even after he left the show and reached the age of 89. He was the last man on the show and had the pleasure of bidding farewell to all the characters on the show.
He was the co-actor with Henry Fonda in “The Virginian”, and it was on this show that he met Frances Farmer, who in turn introduced him to his Eileen Detchon, his wife. However, he left her in 1985, after which he married Barbara Bushman, who survives him and his along with three sons and eight grandchildren.
